Country Basics
Liberia is located in Western Africa. The west side of Liberia meets the Atlantic Ocean and the rest of the country boarders Cote d’Ivore, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Liberia has just come out of 15 years of civil war that has left the country in ruins. Once a thriving, developing country, Liberia is now one of the poorest nations in Africa. However, the people are determined and they are rebuilding. The inauguration of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in January 2006 brought hope to the nation and she is committed to the strengthening of Liberia.
About the Children?
The Liberian children are gorgeous and strong. Sadly, in war-ravished Liberia, those who are not strong enough do not survive. There are a number of faith-based organizations that have set up orphanages in Liberia. Unfortunately, there is not enough room in the orphanages for all of the children who need care and so many live on the streets. There are Liberian children of all ages (very young infants all the way up to teenagers) waiting for families. The children have beautiful dark skin and dark eyes.
Why Are The Children Available for Adoption?
Most of the children are relinquished because of the extreme poverty in Liberia. However, there are also many children who are orphans because of the war.
How Long Does the Process Take?
The estimated time frame from referral to travel is 4-6 months.
What is the Cost?
Adoptive families report that their Liberian adoptions cost $10K – $12K when completed.
