Advanced Thrift Store Tips

By now you have figured out that shopping at thrift stores can really save you money. or maybe you have tried shopping the thrift stores and have been disappointed with selection or prices. Either way, take a look at some advanced thrift store tips that will help you net the real bargains, such as a brand new Barbie bike for $5 or 5 pairs of name brand jeans for $3.

Know when to shop

Because thrift stores have a changing inventory, it is important to know when to shop. If you want the best selection, shop during the week, preferably on a Monday or Tuesday. This is because many people make donations on the weekend. If you live close to a thrift store, visit on different days to see when you find the best items.

Shopping at the end of the year or the beginning of the next is another time to get a great deal. Lots of donations come in around the holidays and right before the end of the year as people clean out their homes and deliver their donations in time to declare them on their taxes. Stores get overwhelmed and price items to sell fast.

For the best prices, find out when the thrift store will have sales and specials. Bag sales are the best. You can stuff as much as you can in one bag for one low price. Roll your clothes instead of folding them, and you’ll fit twice the amount in the bag.

Half price days are great when you want to buy something that is more expensive, such as electronic equipment.

Know where to shop

Thrift stores aren’t all alike. You’ll routinely do better in some stores than you will in others. The greatest bargains are often had in privately run stores, although the major chains may have a larger space and therefore a better selection. Shop in stores that are located near upscale neighborhoods. The goods will usually be of higher quality.

When you visit many different stores, you will start to get a feel of where you can do better on which items. One store may supply you with the latest books, while another may be better for toys or dressy clothing.

Get to know the people that work in a particular store. They will be able to tell you what you can expect from the store, alert you to sales and coupons and even hold items for you when something specific comes in the door.

Happy Shopping!
