I talk so much about the Disney parks around here, especially the domestic ones, that it might appear those are the only Disney vacations available. However, there are many other Disney vacation options out there, and today I’m starting a recurring column on one of the largest: Adventures by Disney.
Adventures by Disney consists of a series of guided tours along various locations in the world. You pay a lot more than you probably would just planning a trip on your own, unless you’re going all out, but for your money you receive a one-of-a-kind experience. Adventures by Disney provides guides to each exotic location, special family-friendly planned activities, special access to things like backstage visits to Broadway shows, and it takes care of all those little travel details like hotel booking and luggage check-in so you don’t have to.
Today I’m going to turn the spotlight on Adventure by Disney’s “A” Tours: Africa, Asia, and Australia. These particular tours consist of an eight-night Australia trip, a 12-night or a 10-night China tour, 10 nights in South Africa, or nine nights or seven nights in Egypt.
In Australia families explore the Great Barrier Reef with a marine biologist for a guide, learn Tjapukai tribe traditions at an Aboriginal Culture Park, take an outback hike around Ayers Rock, tour three nights around Sydney, and have an Aussie barbecue while getting up close with some crocodiles.
Activities for the two China adventures include three-night-stays in both Beijing and Hong Kong, a privately-guided panda visit at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a cable car ride up to the Great Wall (with some time to walk around the famed structure), and of course, a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland.
Adventures by Disney travelers to South Africa will get to spend three days on a safari at the Kapama Game Reserve, sightsee in Cape Town for four days, see the Cape of Good Hope with its African penguins, take in a dinner among the elephants at the Knysna Elephant Park, and partake in a wine tasting in the heart of Cape Dutch’s wine country.
Finally, a tour around Egypt includes an up-close trip to the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx – all on camelback, three nights both cruising on the Nile River and privately touring Cairo with an Egyptologist, and exploring the ancient temples along the Nile and the pharaohs’ tombs found therein at the Valley of the Kings.
It all sounds fantastic, and had I the budget (these particular Adventures by Disney range from $4,000-$5,000 per child and $5,000-$6,000 per adult) I would definitely be tempted to sign up. I might not be crazy about touring with a group of other families, but the exclusive behind-the-scenes opportunities provided by Adventures by Disney coupled with the luxury of not having to work out all my own travel details is quite tempting.
