Adventures by Disney: Urban History

The time has arrived for my final look at Adventures by Disney. It’s fitting that today’s blog features a vacation that takes its guests to Disneyland, among other more urban and historical retreats throughout the United States.

To my surprise, there are currently no Adventures by Disney trips to either Disney World or to New York City. I could have sworn that AbD at least went to the latter some point, but for whatever reason that’s not on the table this year. Instead, AbD’s East Coast tour focuses on colonial history, with an 8-day 7-night Mid-Atlantic Family Vacation. Or as I, a girl who grew up in the Philadelphia area and now lives an hour south of DC, like to call it: the Home Tour.

The trip starts in Philadelphia, birthplace of the Revolution. Guests take a trolley ride through the city, exploring both its new urban parts and visiting some of the historical highlights of the town, including the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.

After getting to spend some free time in the City of Brotherly Love, travelers will then head south to the nation’s capital. There they’ll hop on bikes to take a private tour of the National Mall, stopping at famous sights such as the Lincoln Memorial and the White House.

The bulk of the DC-area visit, however, revolves around the historical spots in the Maryland-Virginia region. Spend a day back in time at the country’s largest historical reenactment city of Colonial Williamsburg, where costumed characters wander the streets to tell tales of days long gone by. Head over to George Washington’s home of Mount Vernon, eating period meals that may once have been cooked in the first president’s own kitchen. Finally, for a bit more modern relaxation, stay two nights at the Great Wolf Lodge wilderness-themed indoor water park.

Today’s other featured trip, the Hollywood Family Vacation, involves less history, unless you count that of cinema and of Walt Disney himself. Spend 6 days and 5 nights getting a behind-the-scenes peek at Walt Disney Studios and touring the film capital of the world.

Media buffs should love this trip, as it comes with a backstage tour of the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a tour of the historic El Capitan Theatre, now used for live shows and Disney screenings. Of course anyone reading here must be a Disney fan, and thus this is the trip for you.

Not only will you get to take a trip of Disneyland, your two-day tour of the park includes special behind-the-scenes access, FASTPASS for many of the rides, and reserved seating for the afternoon parade. But for me, the real lure of the trip is a glimpse inside the world of the Disney Imagineers. Take a look at some of their prime creations and perhaps also get a glimpse of current projects. There will also be a special Imagineer store open for the experience.

Now we’ve come to the end of my exhaustive look at the Adventures by Disney program. However, some details and even some trips may change from year to year, so as always be sure to check out the official website for all of the latest information.
