How do you manage potty training when someone else has to take over? This is a bit of the dilemma we faced going into the evening on Day 1.
I am happy to report that our little one made it through his nap completely dry. I put training underwear on him for his nap (thick cotton underwear, not pull up diapers). Because I didn’t want to risk the couch where he normally naps, I set up a tent in the living room and placed a thick blanket inside the tent. Fortunately the blanket wasn’t needed.
Things went well for the rest of the afternoon as far as making it to the potty. While no bowel movement has shown up just yet, he was successfully using the potty otherwise when he felt the urge to go.
There was one interesting mishap when he forgot to point down, and this flooded the bathroom floor and my pants as I sat there reading his book. Since this one is my third child, I am quite used to bodily fluids by now, so it didn’t phase me much despite the fact that I knew that the chances of me getting a real shower until the next morning would be slim. My middle child thought the whole thing was very funny. It upset my potty trainee, though, who promptly declared he was going to the store to buy more diapers.
Fast forward to after dinner when I went off to work in the other room and my husband took over potty duty. Unfortunately, this is when the first accident of the day happened. The kids all went upstairs to play in one of the bedrooms, and it wasn’t long before the two older kids called down to report that our potty trainee had wet his underwear, the floor and even the side of the dresser.
Other than that incident, the evening and night passed uneventfully, and our child emerged in the morning dry. But the training is far from over. There is still day two to get through. Wish me luck.
