Advice for a Small Living Room

The living room is often the center of the home. We use it for relaxing, entertaining, as a play room and often even for working. It really is the everything room, especially in smaller homes.

Maximizing the space and keeping everything functional is the goal of a small living room. There are some special considerations and things that work well in a small space. Here is some advice for you if you want to set up or redecorate a small room.

Start with the Seating

To some degree, your small space is going to dictate the type of seating that you can have, for the purely practical reason of whether or not it can fit! Small living rooms can’t handle a lot of furniture, either, so it may not be able to accommodate the typical combination of a sofa and chairs. Try a love seat or an extra long sofa with a long cocktail table. You might even throw in an ottoman or cube that can double as both storage and seating.

Patterns Can Work

Many people stay away from patterns in a small space. The fact is, though, patterns can work very well in a small living room, so there is no need to shy away from them. Choose and interesting rug, curtains or accessories such as pillows. Just remember to keep other pieces neutral to avoid too much going on at once. This is true whether your living room is small or large.

Look for Pieces that Can Multitask

Beside having an ottoman or cube that can double as storage, look for other ways that your furniture can multitask. For example, you can hide your television away in a wardrobe when you are entertaining, find a coffee table with a lid that can store board games or books, etc.
