Affordable Fall Family Fun

left

The first day of autumn is just two weeks away, and just because Wal-Mart and Target already have their Christmas displays up doesn’t mean you should fast forward over this wonderful season. Fall is a great time to bond with your family in the great outdoors before Old Man Winter arrives and your kids refuse to move away from the warm TV.

To help spice up the season, consider attending ones of the following fall-themed parades, festivals and kid-friendly events that won’t bust your family’s budget:

Half Moon Art and Pumpkin Festival, San Francisco, California: On October 13-14, you can experience a pumpkinpalooza designed to delight the entire family. In addition to viewing giant pumpkins parading down Main Street, you can consume a year’s worth of the orange gourd-like squash in scrumptious pies, cookies, bars, jams, ice cream and pancakes. The festival also includes costume and pie-eating contests, a Pumpkin Run, plus live music and street dancing.

Didier Farms Prairie View–Lincolnshire, Illinois: During the month of October this farm offers a cornucopia of family fun. In addition to the traditional hayrides to the pumpkin patch and a 5-acre corn maze, Didier Farms boasts a petting zoo, a Halloween costume shop, a Scarecrow Alley and an Indian Teepee Town. Your kids can also ride a pony or visit the Educational Farming Display where they can feed piglets and baby chicks.

County Line Orchard, Hobart, Indiana: Wagons take you out to a massive field where you can pick apples and pumpkins. When you are done you can stroll over to the 12-acre corn maze. There’s also a small petting zoo, a storytelling area and a Country Store where you can purchase fresh donuts, cider, pies, and candy. In addition, on the weekends you can enjoy a night campfire and haunted hayrides.
