For most American families, Labor Day weekend is the last hurrah of the summer. It’s a time set aside for picnics, parties and last-minute back-to-school shopping. Of course, the latter is no fun and the two former options can be pricey if you aren’t careful.
So, what can you do to make the last long weekend of summer memorable if you don’t have money to burn?
Here are some ideas:
Dress-Up: This idea is perfect for young kids who enjoy imaginary play. Collect clothes from around the house that can double as uniforms. You can help your children celebrate the labor force by dressing up as doctors, nurses, bus drivers, firefighters, or police officers. While you are getting on the garb, talk to your kids about various jobs and ask them what they would like to be when they grow up.
Chores: Who says chores can’t be fun? If you work together as a team and include a nice reward at the end, you won’t have a problem getting your kids on board. Car washing can be a blast for kids, especially if it’s sunny and hot outside. Not only will this chore be a great way to cool off, but it’s also a great bonding experience, and much more affordable than taking your vehicle to a professional car washing operation.
Inexpensive Parties: Forget about blowing the rest of your summer budget on an elaborate holiday party. Rather, keep it simple and affordable with fun themes, such as “A Night Under the Stars.” For this outdoor get-together line a table with cheap candles, and then string Christmas lights and paper lanterns from tree branches. Roast marshmallows over a grill or backyard bonfire, then top off the night by viewing the stars with borrowed binoculars or telescopes. Party favors could include recycled plastic bottles that kids can use to catch fireflies.
