It’s simple, really. If you are looking for an affordable family friendly holiday activity, head to your local mall. The activity is not set amongst the stacks of sweaters or rows of remote controlled toys. In fact, you don’t even need to step foot inside a single shop to enjoy the festive treats that await you behind glass walls or inside fencing near the food court.
As I continue my series of blogs spotlighting seasonal store window displays I am focusing on the Pacific Northwest, specifically Seattle, Washington. That’s where you’ll find Nordstrom’s flagship downtown store and its spectacular seasonal window displays and store decorations.
This year window shoppers are being treated to “Once Upon a Holiday,” which tells the tale of Sophie, a young girl who whispers her Christmas Eve wish to the moon. An unfortunate incident involving a cow wearing a rainbow-striped scarf brings the moon crashing down into Sophie’s backyard and threatens to cancel Christmas, but thanks to a loyal band of forest creatures the holiday gets back on track.
More than 60 Nordstrom staffers (not professional window decorators) volunteered to give up part of their Thanksgiving Day to decorate windows and hang Christmas decorations throughout the store. As for the famous windows, Nordstrom volunteers transplanted Lisa Evans’ illustrations into scenes featuring luxurious white, cream, silver and gold party dresses on glitter encrusted white mannequins. Flying above the sparkly dresses are flocks of birds, adorned with colorful jewels. Some of the birds are perched on trees, while others are seated on mounds of fluffy white snow and still others carry strings of oversized baubles in their beaks. The window displays also feature the moon (prior to its unfortunate fall), which is lit gently with matte white bulbs buried in snow-dusted evergreen boughs.
The holiday spirit is also prominently displayed at Seattle’s Pacific Place shopping center where halls are decked with Nutcracker sculptures, poinsettia plants and posters promising daily snow flurries in the atrium.
