Affordable Lodgings in North America

Gas prices are soaring, the price of homes is dropping and the stock market is unstable. For many families the thought of taking a vacation during these tough economic times is simply out of the question. Which is why I’ve been writing a series of blogs on how to travel without going bankrupt.

In previous blogs I listed a variety of hotels that are offering incredible savings on rooms–only to take advantage of the deals you would have to journey to the far reaches of the globe. If you are looking to stay a bit closer to home (provided “home” is North America) then consider these cost saving accommodations. Each is listed at under $150 per room per night and some as low as $65.

Sure, you could stay at discount chains like Motel 6 or Red Roof Inn, but I think you’ll find the following properties provide more bang for your buck:

CANADA

Les Bons Matins is a B&B that consists of four adjacent town houses on a quiet street in downtown Montreal. The rooms have wooden floors, exposed-brick walls and large eclectic paintings. Rooms start at just $122 (that includes breakfast) per night.

The Woodshire Inn is a popular Nova Scotian inn, which provides travelers clean and spacious rooms for just $84 per night. In addition to sleeping on handmade cedar canopy beds, guests are treated to a hearty breakfast each morning at no additional charge.

CALIFORNIA

Casa Malibu is a converted motel that sits directly on the beach. But its prime location is not its only attribute. For just $129 per night you get a room that features whitewashed furniture, fireplaces, and exposed-wood ceilings, plus daily breakfast and free parking.

Figueroa Hotel is located in downtown Los Angeles and is known for its Moroccan décor. Rooms include Iraqi wall hangings, Indian curtains, and Kurdish grain-sack pillows used as chairs and go for as little as $134 per night.

The Tallman Hotel was originally built in 1896 and is still going strong today. It is located in Upper Lake, California and offers rooms for just $119 with breakfast. All the garden rooms have a veranda or balcony; those on the ground floor also have an outdoor shower and teak soaking tub.
