Decorating a nursery is more joyful than decorating any other space in the home. Getting the baby’s room ready is an exciting time, the prelude to wonderful new experiences. Of course, you want your baby’s room to be gorgeous, but let’s face it; not everyone has a fortune to spend creating a nursery that looks like a page that fell out of a magazine.
That’s okay! Creativity goes a long way. You can create a wonderful, comfortable nursery for your baby without going into to debt to do so.
A fun idea, one that will also help stimulate your baby in time, is to create geometric shapes on the walls. You can tape off different shapes and paint them different colors to make them pop. Don’t be afraid to be whimsical, adding a few polka dots or stripes here and there if desired.
Instead of pricey prints or trademark characters, you can use solid colored fabric treatments, mixing and matching the colors with those you have chosen for the wall. Mixing and matching is much more interesting than using one solid color. It gives the effect of pattern, if you repeat various colors throughout. You can also embellish different treatments if desired. Add a strip of yellow fabric or ribbon to edge a pale green comforter or add stripes or shapes to different pieces by ironing or sewing them on.
It helps to go out shopping and collect some paint chips in colors you like so you can try to match them to fabrics. Or, you can do the opposite, finding great fabrics first, and then having the paint matched to those colors.
Another cute idea to inject some print, pattern, or character into the space without going all out “theme room” is to use children’s placements in the space. You can make great stuff out of placemats, like pillows, window valances, and even runners for dresser tops. You can even sew a few together to make a quilt or sew several side by side and then sew them to a backing to make a cute, inexpensive accent rug. Alternatively, sew together blocks of fabric in different colors for a patchwork quilt or rug.
