Affordable Winter Escape

Camping is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy a family vacation.  However, during the winter months most clans retreat to warmer venues, even though the season is a terrific time to get outside and commune with nature.

If you are game to camp in the snow and cold, be prepared to do your homework first.  For starters, you should never set-up camp in a remote location during the winter. This is especially true if you are roughing it in a mountainous area.  Avalanches kill hundreds of hikers, skiers and campers each year.  Before erecting a tent at the base of a mountain call a local avalanche center to check on conditions.  The American Avalanche Institute provides courses in avalanche safety and also offers free guides on how to choose safe places to enjoy a winter camping adventure.

Other ways to stay safe while winter camping is to go with a buddy and wear proper clothes.  Dressing in layers of waterproof clothing is a simple way to stay warm and dry.  Staying dry is critical in preventing frostbite and hypothermia.  In addition, you should avoid drinking alcohol and caffeine while camping in the winter, as doing so may cause dehydration.

Hiking is a cheap form of entertainment while camping.  Unfortunately, during the winter, navigating a trail could be deadly if you are not careful.  Remember to place your socks and hiking boots in a warm area so you are not slipping into frozen items as you set off on your journey.  Also, consider bringing along some snowshoes or a hiking pole if you are planning to venture out in deep snow.

Finally, even though the temperatures may not be soaring, if you are moving around outside you can work up a sweat.  Cold, dry air can dehydrate you in a hurry.  It’s important to drink plenty of water.  You can prevent your water from freezing by adding flavor mixes to it.  The ingredients in the mix help reduce water’s freezing point.
