It’s not Iceland or Sweden, but there are still some great travel deals to be had in Newport, Rhode Island this winter. However, unlike Reykjavik where the seasonal activities are centered around outdoor plazas, Newport has offerings that are more my speed… slow and indoors.
The city’s luxe mansions are dressed up for the holidays (inside and out) and Victorian inns that were once home to Newport’s elite now host guests from around the world. And the best part… during the off season (November-March) the rooms are surprisingly affordable.
If you are looking for a travel deal check out the Legendary Inns of Newport, a collection of three historic mansions, which have been transformed into hotels. Each is uniquely decorated allowing you to experience the way Newport was in its Victorian heyday. The Cliffside Inn, Adele Turner Inn, and Abigail Stoneman Inn, all offer afternoon tea service, made-to-order gourmet breakfast, and luxurious rooms filled with antiques, artwork, and one-of-a kind furniture pieces. Guest rooms also include an item that will have you thinking twice about venturing outdoors–a working fireplace (some suites have two or three).
And the room rates are holiday gifts unto themselves. For example, classic rooms start at $125 at the Adele Turner, $150 at the Cliffside, and $250 at the Abigail Stoneman for weekdays from December 1, 2007 through March 31, 2008. Weekends cost more and require a two-night minimum stay. Compare that to the $400 plus prices guests pay during the summer months and you realize the kind of deal you’re getting.
One of the most popular rooms at the Cliffside Inn, the collection’s flagship property and former home of Beatrice Turner, is the one the legendary artist once slept and painted in. The room boasts a whirlpool bathtub adorned with swan-shaped towels and behind the main door are decorative panels painted by Turner herself. The room starts at $225 midweek.
If you prefer to stay closer to the downtown area you might consider getting a room at the Adele Turner. The property is located within walking distance of dozens of shops and restaurants. Also, of the three inns, the Adele Turner is the most value-priced property. Guests staying here are treated to a daily wine and food-pairing event featuring regional wines and New England artisan cheeses, which is included in the room rate.
If you are willing to spend a bit more for a weekend escape then book a room at the Abigail Stoneman. The inn spares nothing in terms of amenities. Case in point—-guests are given a “pillow menu” offering 15 different styles of pillows upon check in and each guest is also allowed to choose from a bath bar of soaps and salts, and water and tea menus. With rooms starting at $250 in the winter compared to $395 in the summer you can relax in style without worrying about breaking the bank.
