Affordable Winter Getaways

With parts of the country still digging out from nearly two feet of fresh snow, it’s no wonder flights to Florida are jam-packed. Why wouldn’t you want to escape to the sun, sand and surf instead of battling frozen sidewalks and brutal wind chills?

Fortunately, there are places along Florida’s Gulf Coast that can accommodate even the tightest budgets. The trick to securing decent lodging this time of year without breaking the bank is to book early. According to Florida’s tourism experts, reasonable winter rates along the Sunshine State’s central Gulf Coast are available if you know where to look.

For those of you looking to bake on the beach while the rest of the country is shivering in the cold, consider the following affordable options:

Sea Crest on Siesta Key: The circa 1957 condominium complex is well-maintained, though it doesn’t include a slew of fancy amenities. Still, the price is right for a one-bedroom unit featuring a full kitchen and spacious living room. At just $154 per night you will be treated to spectacular water views that surround the 8.5-mile-long barrier island located just south of Sarasota. The beaches boast powder-soft white sand and crystal blue water, as well as biking, kayaking and boat rentals. The condo complex sits right next to Crescent Beach and features private beach access. The property is also equipped with a heated pool, picnic area, shuffle board, free Wi-Fi and laundry facilities.

Sea Captain Resort on the Bay in Clearwater Beach: The no-frills 1950s-era motel boasts 29 units, including basic rooms, efficiencies and suites. Don’t expect much in the way of decor; however, you will get a very clean place to spend the night after luxuriating on nearby Clearwater Beach. The resort’s beds and linens are new and the grounds are immaculate. What’s more, you have full access to the beach and pier, which is located across the street from the motel. For those who opt to stay on-site, you will be able to use the motel’s pool, hot tub, shuffle board, gas grills, fishing poles and bikes. What’s more, a basic room with a microwave and mini refrigerator will set you back just $137.
