I remember when weekends used to be fun, way back before I got married, had children and bought a house. Now it seems like my weekend is totally taken up by my to do list. All week long I’m adding to the list so by the weekend it’s pretty long.
During the week I just don’t have the time or energy to stay on top of the house and the yard so I put it off for the weekend. Then I’m staring at two days of work. Don’t we look forward to the weekend so we don’t have to work?
Some things just have to be done on the weekend, they take too much time to get done in the evening after work but we can do a better job of freeing up some of that weekend time.
Saturday is usually errand day for me. I try to only go out once. I make a list of everywhere I need to go and what I need to do or get at each stop and then I plan my route so I’m not doing a bunch of unnecessary driving.
I usually try to do laundry whenever a basket is full, I sort as I go so I can do laundry as needed. Now that the days are shorter I do laundry on the weekends because I like to hang my laundry out to dry. This doesn’t work too well this time of year. By the time I get home and get a load of laundry ready to hang, it’s already getting dark. So, for now, I have to do that chore on the weekend.
Everything else can really be done during the week. If you just take an hour every day and do a little bit here and there it won’t pile up and you will have more free time on the weekends. Try to do double duty whenever possible, fold laundry or dust while you are on the phone, wipe up the bathroom after your shower or the kids baths, make a double batch of dinner and freeze it for another night. Little things add up and will help lighten the load so that maybe you can put your feet up and relax on Sunday.
