Alabama Genealogy Resources

Alabama I’ve heard it said that many people never leave the state that they were born in. If this describes your ancestors, then it can be helpful to find genealogy resources that are specific to that state. Here are a bunch of genealogy resources for the state of Alabama.

AlGenWeb is an outgrowth of a project called the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project. AlGenWeb provides a single entry point for all counties in Alabama where all the databases are cross-linked, indexed, and maintained by a coordinator. This is an excellent place to start your genealogy research about ancestors who come from Alabama.

FamilySearch has a page of genealogy resources that are specific to Alabama. You can start by clicking on a particular county.

There are links to major repositories of records that are located in Alabama, (including the Alabama Historical Association, the Alabama Department of Archives and History, and more). Scroll down to find a list of other FamilySearch Wiki articles that are about Alabama.

Ancestry.com has an Alabama family history research page. This is where to find record collections and genealogy resources about Alabama that are accessible through Ancestry.com.

There are a few record collections that are free, but most will require a person to have an Ancestry.com membership in order to see them. The Alabama Genealogical Society, Inc., is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1958 to assist and support the research of its members by finding, safeguarding, preserving, and publishing records pertaining to Alabama families and their history. It serves all 67 counties in Alabama.
