All Aboard for More Holiday Fun

Many people are surprised to learn that a version of the Polar Express runs in the state of Hawaii. The snow may be fake, but the merriment involved is 100 percent authentic. In fact, the popular holiday-themed train ride is available in cities around the country. It gives families a chance to see Santa without having to brave mall crowds and train-loving kids get a ride of a lifetime.

The following are just two railways across the nation that are decked out for the season:

CALIFORNIA

In Fillmore, California, the Fillmore & Western Railway Company offers multiple Christmas-themed train rides for kids of all ages. One ride allows families to have dinner with Santa, while the other two give clans the chance to pick the perfect Christmas tree, or visit the “North Pole.”

The “Christmas Tree Train” chugs out to a private farm where passengers choose the perfect tree. (Tickets cost $24 for adults, $14 for kids 4 to 12, and $10 for 2- and 3-year-olds. Christmas trees are an additional cost.) Meanwhile, the “Dinner with Santa” trip features a 75-minute ride, meet-and-greet with Santa, plus dinner with kid-friendly foods. (Tickets cost $47 for adults and $26 for kids.) Finally, the “North Pole Express,” features a bevy of elves reading a Christmas story to passengers at the train station. The train then heads to the “North Pole” to pick up jolly ol’ St. Nick before returning to Santa’s Village where passengers can visit craft and food booths or ride on a carousel.

WASHINGTON

Each December Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad hosts the “Snowball Express.” The family-friendly train ride begins with carolers singing classic holiday tunes. The 20-minute ride to the “Island of Misfit Toys” on Mineral Lake then proceeds with group games and more singing. The ride also features gifts from Santa, hot apple cider, cookies, and hot chocolate. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $20 for kids 4 to 12.
