I just ran across a cool site that teaches kids about US Geography. I it called 50states.com. before you go look at the sight, I will warn you, it does not look like much, but looks can be deceiving.
Once you navigate to the website, you will find a listing of all the states as well as several United States Maps. Clicking on any state will give you a plethora of information on that state. If we visit Alabama, for example, you will find the following information:
- Capital City, including city guides, and global position
- County information, which includes county maps
- The area code link will take you to a page that lets you find the area code for each city or area.
- Biographies of famous people places and events from Alabama
- Information of states bordering Alabama
- Climate information on Alabama
- State Constitution
- Education Information regarding schools and colleges
- Travel information
- State tree and flower links
- Parks and Recreation
- Just about any statistic, fact or trivia you can think of
Beyond the Individual States, you will find full country maps with and without the state and capital city names. Therefore, as you lean the individual states, you can piece together the pieces into a whole country.
Some of this site is commercial, which makes sense, as the maker of the site needs to be paid. There are yellow pages links, sponsors, and purchase links for flags, pins, and more. However, the website is predominantly and obviously educational and very valuable. If you decide to take advantage of all of the geographical information your child can learn on this site, you might even want to buy something like a state flag replica or state pin to reward them for learning state information. When they are done, they can have a souvenir from each state.
