Domestic violence survivors came together last month to kick off a three-day conference designed to provide resources to saviors, share experiences, and gain empowerment. Domestic violence survivors from across the United States attended the three-day conference which focused on economic independence and cultivating personal leadership skills. The goal was to help survivors learn to share their message to victims still in need.
Survivors of domestic violence may face serious financial roadblocks as a result of their abuse. It’s not unusual for survivors to have forced out of the workforce for periods of years. Victims were often unable to pursue education or job development. Damaged credit is a common problems survivors need to overcome.
Domestic violence knows no economic, social, religious or political boundaries. Any women can be a victim and all were welcome to participate in the conference and share their own story of survival. Participants were given the opportunity to learn from financial, advocacy and personal growth experts who offered sessions on a variety of topics.

Through the sharing of their personal stories, survivors were also given public speaking tips and received media training to form a Survivor Speaker’s Bureau in 2007. This bureau, will offer survivors an opportunity to become advocates on a local and national level.
The national leadership conference was part of The Allstate Foundation Domestic Violence Program. The foundations has provided over $2 million for grants to national and state domestic violence organizations since 2005.
In alliance with the The National Network to End Domestic Violence Fund, (NNEDV) Fund and its affiliated state coalitions, The Allstate Foundation Domestic Violence Program works hard to provide knowledge and skills especially those related to financial security and economic empowerment in order to help survivors of domestic violence.
The Allstate foundations is working hard to help victims speak out and rebuild lives damaged by domestic violence. Initiatives such as the Education and Job Training Assistance Fund, a new financial literacy program currently in development and the Survivor’s Speaker’s Bureau, The Allstate Foundation Domestic Violence Program is filling the funding void for domestic violence resources.

The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) Fund is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt social change organization representing state domestic violence coalitions. The NNEDV Fund is dedicated to creating a social, political, and economic environment in which violence against women no longer exists. The NNEDV Fund accomplishes these goals through capacity building for coalitions, public education, training, and technical assistance to maintain and develop the professional expertise of advocates.
