Grilled cheese sandwiches are the perennial children’s favorite. Hey, if you pair one with a bowl of tomato soup, I’m a pretty happy camper myself. But what are some ways to pump up the old sandwich, give it some panache, some flair, some excitement?
Roast Beef and Mozzerella
Prepare your bread as usual, but use mozzarella instead of cheddar. Lay a slice of roast beef on the cheese, add another little bit of cheese so it will all stick, and then top with bread and cook as normal.
Or . . .
Use a loaf of French bread. Slice it the long way and layer your cheese and beef, then toast it in the oven. Tre magnifique!
Or . . .
Using the French bread, spread a layer of onion dip along one side and use the beef and cheese as discussed, then add some tomato and toast in the oven.
Or . . .
Throw some sautéed green peppers and onions on there, and create a Philly beef steak.
Ham and Cheese
Start your sandwich the traditional way, but add some ham in the center.
Or . . .
Use the French bread and a mixture of cheddar, mozzarella and Swiss cheese to complement your ham, then toast in the oven.
And . . .
Serve it up with some honey mustard.
Pizza Sandwiches
How about spreading some spaghetti sauce on your bread and topping with cheese, and maybe some pepperoni and olives as well?
Or . . .
Use the French bread and top with all your favorites, then toasting in the oven?
The basic concept of a grilled cheese sandwich is classic, but it can be modified in so many ways to suit the tastes of your own family. Go a little crazy – add anything you like – grill it or toast it. Have fun!
