Amazon’s Bestselling Books – November 2007

Wondering what everyone in America is reading right now? I was a little curious myself and decided to take a look at Amazon’s bestseller list. I was pretty surprised to see how many nonfiction titles were listed amongst the top ten, but I do understand that twice as many nonfiction as fiction books are published per year, so maybe I shouldn’t have been so surprised.

Coming in at #1: “You: Staying Young: The Owner’s Manual for Extending Your Warranty” by by Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz. This book was written to help us understand how our bodies age and what we can do to stay healthy during this natural process. Once we understand how all of our systems work, we can reprogram them to function like they did when we were younger.

#2 on the bestseller list is “Rescuing Sprite: A Dog Lover’s Story of Joy and Anguish” by by Mark R. Levin. Sprite was a much beloved dog who collapsed one night and was rushed to the veterinarian. The book tells the story of the devotion of the family and their commitment to their pet. A portion of the sales from this book will go to animal shelters.

#3 is “Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food” by Jerry Seinfeld’s wife, Jessica. She appeared on the Oprah show and talked about her recipes, which disguise healthy food so children will eat it.

At #4 is “Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia” by Elizabeth Gilbert. The author went on a journey of self-discovery, recovering from a difficult time in her life. She sampled the cuisine of Italy, the religious tenor of India, and fell in love in Bali, these three aspects of her life being fed where she had previously been starving.

#5 is “I am America (and So Can You!)” by Stephen Colbert. A strangely constructed title masks the real purpose of the book, which is to make fun of politics and present his own viewpoint on the world, from things that scare him (what’s lurking under the sea?) to Kashi cereal. Obviously a bit irreverent, it looks hysterical nonetheless.

Coming in at #6 is “You: On A Diet: The Owner’s Manual for Waist Management” by by Mehmet C. Oz and Michael F. Roizen. From the authors of our #1 bestseller, we learn how to manage our weight, why we store fat the way we do, and why we get overwhelmed with cravings. You will be given a two-week rebooting program that will help you lose two inches off your waist right from the start.

#7 is our first fiction offering, “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by the author of “The Kite Runner,” Khaled Hosseini. Hailed as being even better than his first novel, “A Thousand Splendid Suns” is the story of two women who experience profound despair and yet solemn hope.

At #8 is “The Daring Book for Girls” by Andrea Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz. A guide for everything from secret codes, having fun at slumber parties, and performing the perfect cartwheel – in fact, it has everything but instructions on how to sew a buttonhole.

#9 is a companion volume, “The Dangerous Book for Boys,” by brothers Conn and Hal Iggulden, who remember what it was like to be a boy. Knot tying, palming coins, and other adventures await on every page as boys get great ideas for how to spend their free time.

Last but not least, #10 is David Baldacci’s “Stone Cold.” Secret service agents are on the trail of a criminal who has stolen forty million dollars. But danger lurks around every corner as dead bodies start turning up, and one of the agents could be next.

So there you have it – what America’s reading this month. Join me again in December for Amazon’s bestselling books.
