My 7-year-old loves following the tales of flighty Amelia Bedelia (the young version), as much as she does making new friends.
It’s true; my daughter has the uncanny ability to morph from bookworm to social butterfly instantly, which is why I knew she would be transformed after reading Amelia Bedelia Makes a Friend.
The I Can Read Level 1 book is perfect for beginners. Author Herman Parish’s choice of words is age appropriate and they’re printed in a way that is easy for young readers to consume. In addition, illustrator Lynne Avril’s colorful and playful pictures practically pop out of the book, which makes reading Amelia Bedelia Makes a Friend even more exciting.
Of course, the prospect of losing a friend is nothing to cheer about.
Then again, this is Amelia Bedelia were dealing with.
The little girl, who takes everything a bit too literally, is coming to grips with the news that her best friend/next-door neighbor Jen is moving away.
The girls have been BFFs since birth. They’ve spent a lifetime playing, singing, dancing and dressing up—-together.
Amelia Bedelia is heartbroken when Jen leaves, but it doesn’t take long before a new neighbor moves in.
Initially, Amelia Bedelia refuses to look at the movers unpacking the newcomer’s stuff. However, that doesn’t stop Amelia Bedelia’s mom from describing in detail all of the items that are being taken into the neighbor’s house. In Amelia Bedelia’s figurative-less mind, a loveseat conjures up visions of a heart-shaped seat, while a twin bed is filled with a boy and a girl with the same birthday.
After some gentle persuading by her mom, Amelia Bedelia ventures over to meet her new neighbor. Turns out Mrs. Adams is a grandma to twins, Mary and Marty.
It doesn’t take long before Amelia Bedelia and Mrs. Adams become BFFs. They play, sing, dance and dress-up—-together.
Then, one day Jenny returns to the block, but lest you think trouble ensues between Amelia Bedelia’s former BFF and her new one… well, you’ll just have to read the book to find out.
Okay, fine. There’s no grand-mama drama to be had in this I Can Read Book. Rather, Amelia Bedelia teaches young readers that friends come in all shapes, sizes, and ages.
You can find out what really went down when Jen returns to the hood and old BFF meets new BFF by viewing Amelia Bedelia Makes a Friend on HarperCollins’ website or purchasing it at various book stores nationwide.
