American Idol Boots Another

If you watched “American Idol” last night, you know another fan favorite was booted off. As we saw with Sanjaya, the fans can only carry a singer so far in the competition. However, if you saw Tuesday night’s show, you may not be surprised that dreadlocked Jason Castro was eliminated last night.

Castro had been told by Simon Cowell to pack his bags Tuesday night after he performed the “utterly atrocious” version (according to Simon) of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sherriff” then forgot the lyrics to his second song, Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.” After his second performance, the always subtle Simon told Castro he thought he should pack his bags.

Castro, age 20, had made it to the Top 4 partially on his easygoing manner and dreadlocked good looks, which made the girls in the audience scream. However, he often seemed uncomfortable and for the last few weeks, hasn’t even been familiar with the songs he was singing. Once it was announced that he was the bottom vote getter, he seemed a bit relieved, something host Ryan Seacrest pointed out.

Actually, being booted out in fourth place puts Castro in some pretty good company. Season 1’s fourth place finisher, Tamyra Gray parlayed her Idol success into an acting career, having had a reoccurring role on “Boston Public” and she is now appearing in the stage production of RENT. Season 2’s fourth place finisher Josh Gracin has seen his two albums enter the country charts. But, perhaps the biggest success by a fourth place finisher was Season 5’s Chris Daughtry, who with his band, Daughtry, has become the third most successful American Idol. The band’s debut album has produced 3 #1 hit singles.

With the departure of Castro, the remaining Idols – teen idol David Archuleta, the only girl left Syesha Mercado, and rocker David Cook – are fighting next week to be in the finale in two weeks. Personally, I think it will be a battle of the Davids and although I hate to see another 17-year-old win, for fear of turning “American Idol” into a teen competition, I am really hoping David Archuleta will pull it off.
