If you watched “American Idol” this week, you know that next week’s season 7 winner will be named David. It just remains to be seen if his last name will be Cook or Archuleta. The two Davids squeezed out the last remaining female contestant, Syesha Mercado, this week. The musical styles of the two Davids are quite different. Although Archuleta is only 17 years old, to me, he has a sort of 70s easy listening feel to his music. On the other hand, Cook is pure rocker, through and through. Regardless of which one wins, I am sure we will be hearing more from both Davids!
I did read some good news yesterday. As you may know, the Idol ratings are down this year, but there is some good that will come from that. Next year, the results show will be reduced from one hour to 30 minutes. I hope this starts a trend! Personally, all the shows that drag out the results are just too long! I don’t have an hour to devote to a show that could be easily wrapped up in 15 minutes!
Today on CNN, I saw the headline “’Idol’ winner joining cast of ‘Grease.’” I almost skipped over it, but am glad I didn’t. Of all the previous Idols, it probably would have taken me a while to name the one that will actually be hitting Broadway – Taylor Hicks! I was glad to read this – I liked Taylor, but of all the Idol winners, he seems to be the one that has seen the least amount of success. On June 6, Taylor will join the cast of “Grease,” playing the role of Teen Angel.
Taylor has said he sees this as the “opportunity of a lifetime” and a way to improve his Idol-tested skills. He will appear on Broadway until September 7th.
Taylor is just the latest of many Idols to perform on Broadway including Clay Aiken (in “Spamalot”), Constantine Maroulis (in “The Wedding Singer”), Diana DeGarmo (in “Hairspray”), and Fantasia Barrino (in “The Color Purple).
