American Numismatic – Library and more!

American Numismatic AssocIn a previous post I talked about libraries and how they are great resources for getting free books, DVD’s and reference materials. Heck, you can even get someone to look stuff up for you – all for free.

Have you ever had a question about money? Maybe you want to know what currency was used in Romania years ago? There is a resource to help:

Today I’d like to introduce you to a little known resource available to everyone – The American Numismatic Association Library. A money library.

The Association itself is in Colorado Springs, but everyone can have internet access – even snail mail access to the library.

There are over 40,000 volumes available for check out through the mail on subjects ranging from the history of American money to banking. They also have DVD’s and slide shows available for borrowing and of course, like every great library, have a reference librarian at your disposal.

Imagine being able to phone or email any question about money to your own private librarian. That’s what they do – they help you research. What a great feature!

The museum itself has 250,000 coins and exhibit pieces, some dating back to the beginning of money. (I couldn’t find an actual date, if you go on the site and find it, leave a comment below please!)

Every year the Association puts together a great workshop – quoted from their site:

The highlight of the numismatic year is the annual Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs where collectors of all ages and know-how come together to experience hands-on numismatics. Week-long interactive classes are offered in a wide variety of subjects from Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection to Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents, World Paper Money and Digital Photography. New day and evening courses taught by hobby luminaries are added every year.

Other resources from this great museum:

  • Girl and Boy Scout badge programs.
    Traveling Exhibits
    Speakers for your event
    Internships
    Grants for research
    Educational programs – with degrees!
    Workshops
    Lessons Plans
    Conventions

My oh my, the list goes on and on.

Since I live in Colorado Springs, I had better get my little bottom over there. It sounds fabulous! Maybe I’ll follow up this post on a future blog.

I bet that home schoolers would have a field day (literally) with all the lessons plans and outings you could take at this museum. Anyone used it for homeschooling?
