Amy Winehouse…Britain’s Britney?

Amy Winehouse is a very talented songstress, but lately, just like Britney Spears, her private life has begun to overshadow her talent. Her first album was nominated for the Mercury Prize, the music award for Best Album in the United Kingdom. Her second album Back to Black has sold almost a million and a half copies. Yet, with all that success, her personal life seems to be a mess.

It has long been suspected that she and husband Blake Fielder-Civil have a problem with drugs. Winehouse herself sang a song that contained the lyrics “They’re tryin to make me go to rehab, I said no, no, no.” In August, it was reported that she spent time in rehab. Her in-laws have asked fans to boycott her recordings until Amy and their son promise to get clean. Blake Fielder-Civil’s father, Giles, said the couple used crack and heroin and were in need of medical help.

Last month, the couple was arrested in Norway for possession of marijuana and fined 500 pounds ($715). Amy’s husband Blake is being held on charges of trying to taint a court case that involves him and another man who are facing assault charges.

Now it seems even her fans are turning on her. Wednesday night, she performed at Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena, but she was booed by fans before finally leaving the stage. Concertgoers said she appeared intoxicated, slurring her words and had trouble standing. After the booing began, Amy told the crowd “To them people booing, wait ‘til my husband gets out of incarceration. And I mean that.” She suddenly stopped singing in the middle of her last song, dropped the microphone, and left the stage.

Her spokesperson said she had had a difficult day after visiting her husband in prison for the first time. This concert was the first of 17 she has scheduled in the United Kingdom after cancelling concerts earlier this year.

So like Britney, where is her rock bottom? What is next? Will she shave off her famous beehive hair? I really enjoy Amy’s music, so I hope that somehow, she can pull her life together.
