She starred in my grandmother’s favorite television show and now she’s a new bride. Former “Touched By An Angel” star Roma Downey wed a familiar name in reality TV—-Mark Burnett (he’s the producer of “Survivor” and “The Apprentice”).
According to news reports, Downey and Burnett got married on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean yesterday afternoon. If you think that’s romantic wait to you hear who officiated the ceremony… none other than Downey’s “Angel” costar, Della Reese. That’s right, the head angel herself, just so happens to be an ordained minister.
The wedding (the second marriage for both Downey and Burnett) was by all accounts a family affair. The ceremony took place at the couple’s Malibu home and their children (from previous marriages) played prominent roles. Burnett’s sons James, 13 and Cameron, 10, acted as best man and ring bearer, respectively, while Downey’s daughter Reilly, 10, was a bridesmaid.
Sources say the ceremony lasted about 30 minutes and included readings of passages from novels and poems selected by family members. Before the start of the reception Downey unveiled a surprise for her new husband. She hired a small plane to fly over their backyard with a banner that read, “… and they lived happily ever after.” (Okay, everyone: Awww…)
PEOPLE magazine reports that the newlyweds and their guests dined on shrimp cocktail, fresh lobster salad and broiled lobster tails before digging into wedding cake, ice cream and fresh fruit. I’m sure there are many more delectable meals to come as the couple heads to Jordan and London on their honeymoon. (Sources say the pair chose Jordan because it was where one of their favorite movies “Lawrence of Arabia” was filmed.) It would seem Burnett and Downey love to travel. They spent much of their courtship flying around the world before getting engaged last November during a Thanksgiving family vacation in Zihuatenejo, Mexico.
Ah, to live like a celebrity…
