I was sitting here looking through our memory box and came across a tradition that my husband and I started on our first anniversary. For the last 12 years on our anniversary we give each other a poem that we wrote. Now it sounds corny and trust me we will never be professional poets we are lucky if they rhyme one or two lines.
I was flipping through our book of poems and reading them you can tell what was going on in our lives around that time. When we were having medical issues you could tell in that years poems, just like we could tell when we were having in law drama. It was very nice tonight as I sit here in my room and hubby has the kids watching a movie with him that I just sat here and read the poems. They brought back some great memories and with most of them I did not even have to look at the dates on them to know what year they were written. For example in 2006 our 7th anniversary he wrote about me losing my hair and being sick and it made me remember getting my first round of chemo a week before our anniversary. It made me remember how scared I was and how unsure I was with my future.
The one in 2007 reminded me that I had hit my one year survivor mark but also that I had just done my prophylactic bilateral mastectomies and how scared I was that it would hurt us. His reassuring words and love that was in that years poem let me know that everything was going to be alright.
Some girls like diamonds and jewelry for their anniversary but for me a plain piece of white paper printed with words of love from my husband is more precious to me than any piece of jewelry could ever be. Just so you know how important these are to me I actually scanned them onto a flash drive that I put in our fire proof lock box.
For your next anniversary consider writing a love letter or poem for your significant other trust me they will appreciate it.
