Looking for ideas for family home evening for my little children with even smaller attention spans can be challenging. But, this week, we had a fun one.
My 3-year old likes pirates, and the lesson was on finding treasure. The original idea can be found here. My 5 year old defined treasure as “something really cool that you find”. I told her that was right! We talked about how a treasure can be anything that is really special. We then talked about our purpose for coming to earth. They needed a little help, but eventually gave the right answers. To get a body, and to learn to obey Heavenly Father (just like we try to learn to obey Mommy and Daddy).
I asked them if they thought Heavenly Father had a treasure for us too? They enthusiastically responded YES! When I asked them what the treasure was, they were a little stumped. We talked about how our treasure is to have perfect bodies, and live with Heavenly Father forever. My 3 year old, who was recently sick, understood the part about how special the perfect bodies were, because the bodies will never get sick. He liked that idea.
I then showed them our treasure map. They were very excited. I asked them if Heavenly Father gave us a treasure map? Again, they responded, “Yes!!”. It took a little coaxing to help them figure out what that map was, but they finally came up with the Holy Ghost, Prophets, and the scriptures.
After that, we went on a little treasure hunt. Your treasure can be anything! I was short on resources, but knew my kids would be excited about popcorn, so I made the treasure a bag of popcorn. They followed clues around the house that were answered by knowing primary songs. It was great! When they found the treasure, they were very excited.
When we wrapped up, I asked them if it was hard to find the treasure. They said yes. I asked them if they thought it would be hard to get Heavenly Father’s treasure too? They said yes. And, then I asked them if they would give up before they got his treasure? And, they said, “No!” It was so great to give them an analogy that they could relate to. And, the lesson I found on Sugardoodle had all the steps I needed to make it a success. Help your kids find their treasure at your next Family Home Evening!
