An iPod Video Projector?

An iPod projector?

This week I found an ad for an iPod video projector. The basic idea of the projector, is that you connectyour video enabled iPod into this huge projector, and you can then project your video onto the wall behind you. I have to say, this makes absolutely no sense to me. I can’t for the life of me understand why you would purchase a large device to then plug your small video playing device into to play.

I understand the idea of maybe plugging your video enabled iPod into your television and watching your video, although I think that to some extent is also a little bit of a stretch. The whole idea of having a video enabled iPod to me would be to watch video in instances when you wouldn’t have a TV, and a portable DVD player would be way too cumbersome.

In the instance of the video iPod projector, it also seems like you’re going around yourself just to use technology. You could just as easily just put a DVD in your DVD player. Or more easily put a DVD in your DVD player in this case. With the iPod projector you will first have to download video to your computer, or upload video from your camcorder to DVDs, then you have to download it to your iPod, connect your iPod to the projector, set it up, and then, and only then, you can finally watch your video. Why not watch it at its original source?

Can you think of any other technology that’s like this? Technology that seems to be functional, simply because it’s technology, not because it’s actually useful?

I have to admit when I first saw this I immediately thought “Ooooh, Cool! I need one of those!” It was only later when I truly thought about it that I realized how utterly pointless it was. What do you think? Can you think of a useful use for the iPod projector?
