An Unexpected Job Offer

Every so often we are approached by a headhunter, previous co-worker or associate that has a job offer. These are often unplanned and unexpected, at a time we may not even be looking for a change. How should you handle these sorts of situations?

First, let it boost your ego a bit. Certainly, someone has recognized your skills and quality of work. This should make you feel proud. Still, don’t let this feeling go to your head. Just because someone wants you… doesn’t mean you have to go!

When presented with an opportunity you were not exactly looking for, you need to do some serious soul searching. Take a step back and pretend you were actually looking for a new job, would this be the one? If not, it is better to thank them kindly but walk away. Don’t leave for something you don’t really want, just because they want you.

If this opportunity is something you have always wanted or you have been feeling the need for a change, then you need to dig deeper into your psyche for a good answer. This will take some internal and external research.

On the external front, it would be time to schedule a formal interview with this new company. In this face-to-face interaction, get all your questions answered. If this meeting goes well and you are still jazzed by the opportunity, the next step is to research your current situation. Talk to your current boss. Find out how they feel about you and whether there are opportunities similar to this in your current company. It is also perfectly acceptable to mention you have been approached with a job offer. They may just beat it!

Once you have all the information from your current job and the new one, start with your internal reflection. Make a list of the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Evaluate personal goals, both long and short term. Talk some long walks or meditate to clear your mind. Look inside and consider what your gut says to do.
