You’ve heard of a Hollywood romance. You may even be familiar with the Hollywood sho-mance (when reality TV show stars hook up during their respective shows). Now get ready to add another “ance” to the list—the “Bo-mance.” It is loosely defined as two male stars who share a close friendship (or at least are photographed together so frequently as to raise questions about the true nature of their relationship).
Recently, it’s the term of choice used to describe Lance Armstrong and Matthew McConaughey’s relationship. Now, the athlete and the actor are addressing rumors that they’re anything more than just pals.
“We tried it. Wasn’t for us,” McConaughey jokes to Details magazine in a new interview that addresses rumors about them – and pal Jake Gyllenhaal – being gay.
Meanwhile, seven-time Tour de France champ Armstrong offers a slightly less humorous answer. Armstrong says his bond with McConaughey grew out of the fact that both men were suddenly single at the same time. McConaughey had broken up with actress Penelope Cruz and Armstrong had called off his engagement to singer Sheryl Crow.
“Our friendship just kind of developed,” Armstrong tells the magazine. “He got out of a relationship; I’d just gotten out of a relationship.”
And just to set the record straight, Armstrong stresses that his relationship with McConaughey is not new. The cycling super star tells the magazine that the two have known each other for nearly a decade and despite the awkward glances they’ve received due to countless photos of them – often shirtless – biking, running and partying together, they are just friends.
“I think people see pictures and they think we’re these overgrown frat guys, but we all have those kinds of relationships – and relationship isn’t a bad word,” says Armstrong. “I mean, we all have buds, we all take guy trips, but you take something very normal and you put it in a magazine, and people start talking.”
For his part McConaughey tells the magazine that he doesn’t feel the need to constantly defend their relationship: “A lot of people don’t understand friendship and brotherhood. I have a great friend in him. I’d do anything he asked me to, even though he’d probably never ask me to, and he feels the same way. It’s fun going out and living life and doing things at the drop of a hat. LiveStrong just happens to be the most deliberate guy I’ve ever met.”
I am a fan of both Armstrong and McConaughey (though I think McConaughey’s current Grizzly Adams look could use some sprucing up) and I can say, the thought that the two were more than “just friends” never crossed my mind. But, after the whole “Oprah-Gayle” brouhaha I am just glad to see the media hype regarding same sex friends is not limited to females.
