Last year I was pretty good about tracking the different animal/pet related holidays and observances with articles like Appreciating Elephants (in honor of Elephant Appreciation Day), Have You Hugged Your Sea-Monkeys Today?, Happy World Turtle Day!, and Hug Your Cat Day: Come Here, Tabby and Mr. Meow!.
That’s just to name a few. There were more (see the list below for some others, including some Aimee wrote). The past few months I’ve been thinking about the number and variety of holidays and observances I found –and the ones I don’t think exist that have occurred to me since.
I decided to keep a list, which is presented below. Some are me just being silly. Some are ones I think are plausible and deserve there own recognition days, weeks, or months but that I don’t think are established yet. If you happen to know otherwise, please let me know!
Holidays and Observances I’d Create If I Was Ambitious Enough
• Single Pet Parents Month
• Play with Your Cat Day
• Animal Veterans Awareness Week (with one day during the week devoted to an Animal Veteran Appreciation Day)
• Celebrating Search and Rescue Dogs Week
• Therapy Dog Appreciation Week (and also have one day during that week designated as Therapy Dog Day)
• Honoring Pet Godparents Day
• Hallelujah for the Pee Posts Day (My mom came up with this one on one of our walks with Murph. I hadn’t even told her I was thinking about creating holiday or observance days either. And then this one cracked me up, because all the posts that get peed on should be celebrated!)
• Ranch Dog Round-Up Day (round them up and give them a day of fun for all their hard work herding!)
• Saluting K-9 Units Week (Again, with a day during the week designated as K-9 Day.)
• Give Drug-Sniffing and Bomb-Sniffing Dogs a Break Day
• Toss a Security Dog a Bone Day
• Arson Dog Awareness Week
• Show Your Pet Sitter Some Love Day (Hugs and kisses from the pets, preferably.)
• Dog Trainer Appreciation Day
• Shower a Shelter with Support Day
• Caring About Kennels Day
