Will it ever end? Just when you think that the Anna Nicole Smith saga couldn’t possibly get any more twisted than it already is—BAM—the “Breaking News” banner on the television suddenly appears and you become privy to more lurid details in the already sordid tragedy.
I’m not planning to blog on the salacious events that transpired in today’s court hearing to determine who gets custody of Smith’s body. Rather, I’d like to spend time discussing the man whose job it is to make the decision regarding where Smith will be buried—Broward County Circuit Court Judge Larry Seidlin.
Have you seen this guy in action? I’ve caught snippets of his “unique” (that’s putting it mildly) behavior on the bench and each time caught myself giggling at his off-the-cuff remarks. Apparently, I’m not alone because now a number of websites are reporting that Seidlin’s behavior is all an act and he’s angling for his own television program ala “Judge Judy.” Aye Ya Yi!
According to news reporters covering the Smith trial, Seidlin frequently throws out comedic one-liners, which send the courtroom into bursts of laughter. So far he has referred to the lawyers with nicknames such as “Tex” and “California” and reportedly (“inexplicably and incongruously”) made a comment about honoring the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan during the proceedings.
While some observers speculate that Seidlin is playing to the cameras, other judicial analysts say his behavior in a courtroom without a jury is “perfectly normal.”
One FOX News legal analyst had this to say about Seidlin’s courtroom behavior:
“All we know is some gossip that he wants his own television show. Who the heck knows if it’s true? … I have no reason to believe it from his demeanor alone. His demeanor is no more histrionic than the demeanor of many other judges who wouldn’t give a second thought to television.”
Seidlin, a former Bronx, New York, taxi cab driver hasn’t commented about rumors that he’s auditioning for a TV show. Let’s face it; this entire Anna Nicole Smith drama/tragedy/nightmare has been strange from the get go… you throw a snarky judge into the mix and now you have one more break-out element for journalists to go ga-ga about.
If you haven’t seen Seidlin in action I would recommend tuning into any cable news network—his recorded oddities wallpaper their coverage. If nothing else you may find yourself smiling. I would have laughed even more if it weren’t for the fact that the entire situation is so utterly sad.
