How many times has this happened to you? You plan a family trip to an amusement park only to be left holding on to massive stuffed animals in the sweltering heat; being begged for money to buy just one more choco-taco; and listening to whiny kids complain about walking in wet shoes after getting soaked on the Roarin’ Rapids ride.
Is it time for an education vacation?
In previous blogs I’ve spotlighted several popular destinations around the nation that offer hands on learning experiences for children… and their parents.
This time I’m turning my attention to Boonesboro, Kentucky.
If you have a Daniel Boone fan in your house, he or she will be delighted to see a handwritten note by the famous trailblazer and other rare artifacts at a new museum at Fort Boonesborough State Park.
The new facility opens this weekend and coincides with the annual “Siege of Boonesborough,” which takes place at the re-created fort near the Kentucky River in Madison County. The event commemorates the September 1778 attack on Fort Boonesborough by Shawnee Indians. Back then settlers holed up inside their ramshackle fort for 10 days before the Indians eventually withdrew.
Museum curators say visitors will be among the first to view unique artifacts that tell the story of Fort Boonesborough, beginning with the Native Americans who hunted in Kentucky long before white settlers arrived. Along with Boone’s handwritten note, other items on display include a 1750s vintage smoothbore fowling gun; a working 18th-century compass like the ones early Kentucky surveyors used; an iron hatchet head that was found in Boone’s Cave in Jessamine County; and a painting depicting one of the Indian attacks on Fort Boonesborough in the 1770s. The museum also explores Kentucky’s role in the Civil War and other events that have shaped the state.
If you make it out for this weekend’s grand opening festivities you can also take part in other special events, including demonstrations of cannon-firing and pioneer crafts.
