Gas prices are almost painful to look at. Once again, we find ourselves paying unbelievable prices, and it is definitely impacting our very frugal budget. Gas is a necessity if you own a car, so it is not like you can just substitute with something else. There are a few ways you can help decrease your overall spending on gas, and some tips to ensure that your gas lasts a bit longer.
#1 – If you normally eat out for lunch, at work, bring your lunch instead. No reason for leaving the building and wasting gas on a short trip. Plus, bringing your own lunch is extremely frugal. It can save you lots of money per week, just by packing your own!
#2 – Purchase gas during the work week. Try not to wait until the weekend, which seems like it is in larger demand. Prices around here tend to go up for the weekend. You can save a bundle just by purchasing your gas during the work week.
#3 – No idling. Do not allow your car to sit in idle for longer that about two minutes maximum. It requires almost twice as much gas to sit and idle, than it does when you are actually moving. A trip to the local drive thru will completely waste enough gas to get you more than 20 miles! Park the car and go in. It takes less gas to start the car, than to sit in idle.
#4 – Combine errands. If you are running out to the grocery store, purchase everything you need for the week. Don’t run out daily, because it is a waste of gas. In addition, combine errands like grocery shopping before you pick the children up from something. You might even get gas while you’re out.
#5 – If you are able to, try public transportation for a couple of weeks. It is far cheaper than buying gas, several times a week. A bus pass, can save you $20-$40 a week, by eliminating the need for your car.
