Another Real Bad Dad

Move over Alec Baldwin, Mel Gibson, Jon Gosselin, “Slumdog” star pop, and the rest of you so-called “bad dads,” the feds have declared a new winner in the race for the world’s worst father.

U.S. Marshals maintain that when it comes to pathetic parents Byron Perkins takes the cake.

In 2005, the 40-year-old father pleaded guilty to drug and weapons charges in federal court. Perkins was sentenced to jail and remained there until last year when his young son became deathly ill and needed a kidney transplant to survive. Perkins begged a judge to release him on bond so he could donate a kidney and potentially save his son’s life. The judge granted the father’s request, but instead of being his son’s hero, Perkins hightailed it out the country with his girlfriend.

Police say the Kentucky father fled to Mexico with his lover on the day he was supposed to get tested to see if his kidney would be a match for his son.

It took authorities more than a year to track down the career criminal, but they finally caught up with the man they dubbed “the world’s worst father” a few months ago.

Last week a judge sentenced the bad dad to nearly 43 years in prison.

Naturally, Perkins’ attorney claimed 43 years was too long and that his client deserved the mandatory federal minimum of 25 years after pleading guilty to guns and weapons charges.

Fortunately, a judge disagreed stating that because of Perkins’ past criminal history and jumping bond to flee to Mexico, the sentence was fair.

“I think that shows just the kind of character we’re dealing with,” said prosecutors. “You’ve got a guy who doesn’t care about anyone’s well being.”

The kicker to this sad tale is that prosecutors claim that despite bailing on his son, Perkins somehow coerced the kid to write a letter to the judge asking for leniency for his deplorable dad.

In the end, the judge dismissed the letter, Perkins got thrown back in jail (where he will remain until he’s in his mid-70s) and the son received a kidney from another relative.
