(The real apple of my eye.)
And then there were two…
If you’ve been following me on the FUN blog, then you know that my daughter has been sucked into an apple vortex of sorts.
Our neighbor recently visited a u-pick apple orchard and came home with a bushel (42 pounds) of crunchy, red orbs. Her plan was to use the bulk of them to bake pies for her church’s Fall Festival and the rest she’d feature in other recipes and crafts.
As it turned out, she barely used half of the bushel for the pies and was left with more than 20 pounds of the popular fruit.
Enter my daughter.
My kid loves apples and my neighbor knows it.
For the past week my 7-year-old has made a beeline for my neighbor’s house upon returning from school. For two hours each day, the two of them have been whipping up fabulous apple dishes and creating stunning apple crafts.
The other day I walked over to my neighbor’s to pick up my daughter and found the two of them filling glass hurricane vases with apples, lemons, cinnamon sticks, acorns and small tree branches. The fall-themed centerpieces complement the apple candleholders they made earlier in the week. They also crafted a series of apple prints, simply by cutting the fruit in half, dipping each piece in paint and stamping on construction paper.
All their hard work has put a serious dent in the apple supply. Yesterday I found out that my neighbor’s haul has dwindled to just two little pounds after making my daughter’s all-time favorite apple recipe:
Apple and Candy Salad
Ingredients:
5 granny smith apples
5 candy bars (Snickers, Heath, or 3 Musketeers, work best)
1 (8-ounce) container of Cool Whip
Directions:
Wash apples, core and cut up into bite size pieces.
Cut candy bars into small pieces.
Mix candy with apples.
Add cool whip.
Stir all ingredients together.
Refrigerate for two hours before serving.
