The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. It was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton who was passionate about the environment. As such he actively pursued the wide-scale planting of trees throughout Nebraska. Today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day although the dates may vary in keeping with the local climate.
And while it might be a stretch, some hotels are taking advantage of the special occasions by offering travel deals. Okay, so it’s a tad gimmicky, but given that the gap between spring break and summer vacation is longer this year it would stand to reason that hoteliers are looking for ways to bolster business.
If you are looking for somewhere to celebrate the auspicious occasion consider the following budget-saving offers:
Martha’s Vineyard
The charming and popular vacation destination is located just south of Cape Cod (about 45 minutes by ferry). The 100-mile long island is home to beaches, nature preserves and celebrities. Businesses there open for the season on April 18th and in an effort to encourage visitors to come early, Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Edgartown is offering an Arbor Day Weekend package that includes accommodations in a studio room. The space features a kitchenette and can comfortably sleep two adults and a small child. For $169 per room per night you will also receive breakfast daily, a special afternoon “green tea party” with drinks and organic homemade baked goods from Winnetu’s Lure restaurant, and kid-friendly activities related to Arbor Day, including the resort’s second annual tree planting. In addition, each child will receive his or her own sapling to plant and will build a birdhouse as a keepsake. The rate also includes rides on vintage fire trucks, tennis, and games on a life-size outdoor chessboard. The special is good from April 25-27, 2008.
Nantucket
The island of Nantucket is smaller than Martha’s Vineyard and lies 30 miles south of Cape Cod. It can be accessed by plane or ferry. During the months of April and May members of Nantucket Island Resorts have discounted nightly room rates for stays through late June. From April 18-June 22, 2008 Jared Coffin House, an 1845 brick mansion with 43 antique-filled rooms, a library, and a garden is offering guest rooms for just $124 per night. Meanwhile, the Cottages at the Boat Basin, which consists of 23 cottages featuring one-, two-, and three-bedrooms with kitchens is offering rates for as low as $162 per night. Many of the cottages come with private balconies or terraces overlooking Nantucket Bay. The offer runs from May 1-22, 2008.
