Are There Different Styles of Love?

I had really never put a lot of thought into the different ways that people perceive love. I know that people can feel love in many different forms. However until recently I really had never thought about there actually being different styles of love. We use the term “in love with” so generally that at times it can be difficult to place a specific definition on the phrase.

One article that I came across stated that not only do people feel and perceive love differently; there are different forms or styles of love that people may experience. In most cases, I would consider the different types of love being the different ones that you might share among friends, lovers, children, and family members. Yet this article even took it a few steps further.

The first style of love suggested was Eros. This type of love may very well be the first type that couples experience. It is based on much passion, intimacy and closeness between partners. This type of love is often thought to be found in the romantics of the world. It is what creates the excitement and passion in the beginning of most relationships.

The second style of love suggested is Ludus. In the opinion f most this type of love is the most undesirable to experience with a partner. A person who experiences a Ludus style of love is in a game of control. They want to win over and toy with the emotions and feelings of others. They often will have several partners and gain enjoyment from the control that they can win over them. These types of lovers find self satisfaction in creating mental and emotional ups and downs in others. I can foresee that many abusive and repeated adultery relationships come from partners who have this point of view on love.
