Are You a Good Housekeeper?

Are you a good housekeeper? What would others in your home say about that?

I would guess it’s not something most of us think about too much. We have way too many other important responsibilities in life to give much thought to it. But for whatever reason, one day I decided to ask my family if they thought I was.

Believe it or not, I had to explain to my teens what a housekeeper was. They had no idea what I was talking about. “What’s a housekeeper?” they asked. So I had to rephrase the question. “What kind of a job do you think I do when it comes to taking care of the house?”

Both of my teens said I did a good job. In fact, one of them started to compare my housekeeping skills to the mom of one of her friends. And well, let’s just say that she obviously appreciates the way I take care of our home.

Then I decided to ask my husband. Now before you raise those eyebrows, let me just get it out of the way and state that yes, I am mostly responsible for the care of our home. I work from home, while he works about 60 hours a week outside the home.

But it’s not just the logistics that make me the housekeeper. I actually want to be the one responsible. In fact, I am more than a housekeeper—I am the queen of our domain.

Although my husband did say I was a good housekeeper, there were a couple of things he pointed out. Now I had a choice to make…I could get all bent out of shape and ask him just who does he think he is. Or I could remember that I was the one who asked.

The truth is he mentioned a couple of legitimate things. These were areas I could definitely improve in. I didn’t look at it as a cut on my housekeeping skills. But it did give me the opportunity to receive feedback…something most of us probably don’t want to receive but could benefit from.

What about you? Are you a good housekeeper? Are you willing to ask those who live with you?
