Do you have food item that you rarely find yourself using as you try to rotate your food? It may be wheat because you don’t want to take the time to grind it, or it may be a food that you know that you could never eat, after you had tasted it. There may be a variety of foods and reasons. If you are not rotating one of your primary foods you may need to consider donating it, and replacing it with one you would use.
If wheat is one of your staples, and you are not rotating it, you may still want to keep it. It can be time consuming to grind wheat flour on a regular basis if you do not normally bake. It may also be difficult to sneak it into other meals. If you choose to not use the wheat in your daily cooking, you should make sure that your family is used to whole wheat products. You may want to purchase whole wheat bread, and other products so the diet adjustment will not be as hard for your family.
One item that I have a hard time using is dried beans. No matter what I do, I never seem to soak them long enough to make them edible. Not to mention beans are very difficult for several of my family members to digest. They often get sick after eating beans (not just mine). For this reason I have decided not to store a large amount of beans in our food storage. We are substituting with peanut butter (a huge staple for my family), frozen meat, and canned meat. Since we use the pantry principle this omission should not affect us greatly.
Another food that I found that our family would not eat a great deal of was canned vegetables. My husband is the only one that likes canned vegetables. The only exception to this is green beans. The entire family will eat canned green beans. We have switched to frozen vegetables for this reason.
If you find yourself reluctant to use a certain food from your food storage, you may want to reconsider storing it. You may not want to use it when that is all you have to eat. Your children may not eat it, and you could have spent your money, and filled the space on something that your family may like better.
