Are You “Martha Stewart Challenged”?

My friend is funny. She always says things that make me laugh. Her latest is her new habit of calling herself “Martha Stewart Challenged.” When she asked how I would like it if I was thus challenged, I replied, “Hey, who isn’t?”

I’ve got nothing on Ms. Stewart. I just like decorating and finding new ways to do things around the house to keep from becoming bored (and boring). I don’t want to get to the point where the only things I have left to talk about with my husband are the best carpet cleaners for pet stains or just how much a pinch of salt really is.

By the way, a pinch can be very different depending on which side of the family wrote down the secret recipe. Keep that in mind.

Getting back to my friend, she is not homemaking impaired in any way. She has a beautiful home that she tastefully decorated with her own little hands. She has great taste and a knack for finding exceptional deals on great furnishings and accessories. She’s very creative, which I attribute to her being such a fun-loving person.

I know others who swear they aren’t creative or just don’t have a knack for decorating, even for the holidays. One woman doesn’t decorate for any holiday and another lady I know hires a professional designer to dress her home for major holidays. These methods work for them, but they would never work for me.

Decorating is fun! Yes, it is. Yes, you can decorate. Who cares if you’re Martha Stewart challenged? I think most people are. We can always get some inspiration from Martha and other mavens if we want to, right?

Use what you like. Trust your taste. Have fun and don’t stress.

I don’t have to be some kind of homemaking super hero to have fun and make my home feel like a fun place to be and neither do you.

Maybe Erma Bombeck is just more my speed…
