Are You My Neighbor? (1995)

moreveggies The next installment in the VeggieTales series is called “Are You My Neighbor?” and teaches children (and their parents) that even if someone is different from you, you still have the duty and privilege of watching out for them and being their friend.

The first story is called “Tale of Two Cities.” Once upon a time, there were two cities that faced each other, and they spent all their time flinging stuff over their city walls. You see, in one city, they wore shoes on their heads, and in the other city, they wore pots on their heads. Neither city could understand why everyone wasn’t just like them, and so they were sworn enemies.

But one day, a little boy with a shoe on his head decides to go out for a walk, and he’s set upon by bandits who rob him and then turn him upside down in a hole, leaving him there. He is passed by two people from his own city who do nothing to help him because they are so busy (although they aren’t too busy to sing a song about it) and is finally rescued by a boy with a pot on his head. This is of course a take-off of “The Good Samaritan,” put in terms children can understand. The two boys strike up a solid friendship and from that time on, the two cities get along just fine.

We then get to see “A Silly Song with Larry.” Today’s tune is “The Hairbrush Song.” Larry gets out of the shower and can’t find his hairbrush. After lamenting it for quite some time, Junior asks, “Why do you need a hairbrush? You don’t have any hair.”

Our last segment is called “The Gourds Must Be Crazy.” Junior Asparagus is having a birthday party and wants to invite all the kids in his class, except for Fernando. Fernando is just too different. Later that night, Junior is surprised when Bob and Larry show up in his bedroom one night. They tell him that there’s an emergency on the U.S.S. ApplePies and they need his help. He comes with them to find that the power to the ship has been damaged and they are about to smash into a huge popcorn ball meteor. There are only two escape pods and there are hundreds of people aboard. Whatever will they do?

Their thought processes are disrupted by Jimmy and Jerry Gourd, two new guys who keep breaking into song while working at their desks. “They’re the new guys,” Junior is informed. A moment or two later, Jimmy and Jerry get into a “discussion” over who is the hungriest. When one wins the contest by saying he could eat a whole planet, Junior’s brain goes into hyperdrive. He puts Jimmy and Jerry into the two escape pods and shoots them directly at the meteor. Just as he hoped, the two gourds eat the meteor and save the U.S.S. ApplePies. Junior learns that just because someone is different, that doesn’t mean you can’t be friends with them, and he invites Fernando to his birthday party.

Always a whole lot of fun, you’ll want to add this VeggieTales video to your wish list.
