Are You Not Your Pet’s Favorite Person?

Don’t take this the wrong way. I love my dogs and my dogs love me. But my girl dog Lally goes absolutely CRAZY when my father comes over. He shows up at the door and it’s like I’m invisible. She sniffs him all over and “boxes” him in joy. Hey, she’s half boxer after all! In Lally’s eyes, there’s nobody she’s happier to see than my dad.

And I know it’s not that she doesn’t love me. She’s my baby girl! But sometimes there’s just That Special Person out there that your pet goes crazy for.

I get to be on the receiving end of the greeting frenzy for my friends’ dog Casey. Now, I’ve known Casey since she was a little wiggly puppy, fresh from her foster home to a forever home with Laurie and Mike. A year and a half later, Casey still greets me with a frenzy of wiggles, licks, sniffs, grunts, barks, and cuddles! And the greeting frenzy lasts for a while. I was over for dinner last week and Casey danced and pranced around me for at least a half hour.

I wonder if it’s a little bit like little kids who love going to see grandparents or other relatives who spoil them. I wonder if maybe the Special Person that the pet goes crazy for reminds the pet of someone they knew before they were adopted. Lally was a stray when she ended up at the shelter in Vermont, and nobody knows what her life was like before she joined the family. I wonder if it just depends on the pet’s personality.

Ah, if only pets could talk! Then I could just ask Lally why she goes nuts when she sees my father. Then Casey could tell us why she gets so very excited to see me.

On the other hand, we have my boy dog Moose. Moose has yet to meet somebody he DOESN’T love. Moose adores everyone equally and wants only one thing: to be petted.
