We are commanded to prepare ourselves for upcoming trials and storms. The counsel to prepare our families both temporally and spiritually is pretty strong today. I am sure that you have thought about food storage and financial preparedness. I have also written extensively about spiritual preparedness. It is also important to consider how prepared you are physically to withstand the disasters and stress that may come your way.
The Word of Wisdom gives counsel on the proper way to care for your body. We are also counseled to get enough rest and to exercise so that our body stays in good physical condition. There are several reasons that we need to prepare ourselves in this manner. One is that if you do end up needing to hike somewhere with your children, or to do major clean up after a storm, that you are physically able to do so. Stress weighs down on the body and weakens the immune system. It is important to be in good physical condition so that you can fight off the effects of stress more effectively. Here are three things that you can do to help prepare yourself and your family physically.
1) First you should begin exercising regularly. You may want to make this a family event. You can start by simply taking a walk as a family three days a week. As your condition improves you may want to increase the amount of time that you exercise as well as the intensity. You can take long hikes or bike rides together to help with the exercise.
2) The second thing that you can do is to get enough rest. This is essential to allow your body to heal and combat illnesses. Every night your body repairs itself as you sleep. If you are not sleeping enough it can affect you physically, emotionally and spiritually. It is also important to encourage your children to get enough sleep as well.
3) Finally, you can work on improving your diet. If you follow the dietary guidelines in the Word of Wisdom you will feel healthier and have increased energy. It is important to teach your children to eat healthy as well.
