Are You Ready For A Multi Racial Family

If you are considering adopting a child or children that are not part of your own race there are a few other things that you need to take into consideration. If you are considering it you are willing to welcome a child into your heart that does not look like you, great we did too. Have you considered that when you do welcome that child into your hearts that you will no longer be like the majority of other families? Are you ready for that?

Have you given any consideration to what your friends and extended family may think? Think back has any of your friends or family ever told a racial joke or used a racial slur? Have you asked your friends and family how they feel about welcoming a child of a different race into the mix? Now I am not saying your friends and family get to make a decision about what child you should or should not adopt but have you asked?

If you do ask and the answers are not quite what you were thinking they would be are you willing to reduce contact with that person? If the answer is no then please reconsider adopting outside your race it will only bring pain to the child and yourself. I really hope that you said yes because you will be blessed with an incredible child to love.

If you said no you have to seriously consider other circumstances that people in your life may have a problem with what then. Say you adopt a child who appears healthy now but later develops a disability and your friend has a problem with that disability will you keep them in your life then? It is the same thing look when you adopt your kids you may not know all there is to know about that child there may be disabilities or chronic illnesses that show up after you have the child in your home. It happened with my two sons neither of them had any disability when they were placed with us but they have been diagnosed with epilepsy and the amount of love just does not change. If I had any friend or family member that used racial slurs, told racial jokes or treated any of my children badly they would be out of my life.

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
