High school football is a big deal in the small county in which I reside. Okay, maybe not as huge as in Texas. Last time I checked we didn’t have NBC knocking at our door to shoot Friday Night Lights II, but the sport is popular nonetheless.
The new football season kicks off this Friday with major match ups at various area high schools, and of course, where there’s a game going on, there’s a tailgate party to go with it.
If you are looking for simple ideas for your next home or away game, then consider these winners:
Decor: If you are partying out of your trunk, then keep the decor simple. Grab some poms poms, hang up a jersey or team pennant, add a few footballs to the mix, and use plastic helmets as containers for chips, dip or fill it with ice and keep your drinks cold.
Game Day Grub: I know there are some gourmet tailgaters out there, but I am not one of them. If I am the only one cooking I like to keep the menu as easy as possible. Think: hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, popcorn, chili and brownies. As for beverages, I would suggest sticking with sports drinks, water, or soda. Unless there are enough designated drivers around, I wouldn’t suggest serving alcohol at a high school tailgate party.
Activities: Prior to kick-off you’ll want to keep your guests entertained with a variety of activities. This is especially important if you have little ones milling around. Consider designating a couple of the moms and dads to help paint faces. Get everyone’s game face on with some face painting in team colors. Another option is to select someone to lead the kids in football practice drills. Have the kids do some jumping jacks, push-ups or sit-ups. By wearing them out early, they will be more likely to sit still during the actual game.
