Are You Taking Advantage of Your Neighborhood?

baby I was born and raised in New York City. Despite that fact, I didn’t visit the Empire State Building until I was well into adulthood. Some friends from out of town visited and wanted to see it. To this day, I still have not gone to the Statue of Liberty.

My point here, is that while New York City may certainly be an extreme in terms of things to do and see, the fact is that living there, I never thought to visit some of the biggest things that attract visitors from all over the world. These places were in my own backyard, so to speak.

Each neighborhood, no matter how large or small has its own set of things worth seeing and doing. Are you taking advantage of your neighborhood?

In our neighborhood, we take advantage of the many offerings that come about through the Parks and Recreation Department of our town, such as movies, fireworks, holiday tree lighting, etc. But there are other attractions that we seems to have forgotten about, such as the historic train that can be ridden on Sunday afternoons, the farmer’s market on Saturdays, the local ponds, off-the-beaten parks, hiking trails, and a local farm and pumpkin patch (which ironically we went to several times a year when we lived farther away).

So, I invite you to take a look around your neighborhood. Maybe your area’s claim to fame is one of the last remaining drive ins, the largest ball of yarn or just the world’s best place to get ice cream. Maybe your town features a tractor show every fall or puts on award-winning theater. Whatever the case, enjoy the uniqueness of the place where you live and take advantage of those things that bring others into your area.
