Yesterday when the sun was shining and I was playing in the yard I started making a list of all the things I need to do outside. One thing I forgot to put on that list was take the Christmas lights down. It’s a mix of rain and snow today so I don’t think it will get done today.
It did make me start to wonder why I needed to take them down. Here in Utah we usually get our first snow in October and since I have to get on the roof to put the lights up, they have to go up in September, then, depending on the weather, they don’t come down until spring.
I decided to turn to Google and see if I really need to take my lights down. While I couldn’t find and hard and fast rules, or even any good reason for taking them down, I did discover that it says some not so nice things about my parentage if I leave them up.
I’m still on the fence though. I’ve taken everything else that was outside down, it’s just those lights. To be honest, I’m terrified of heights. I’ve had to overcome that a little since buying this house, for some reason it will not accommodate my fear and put everything at ground level, like the swamp cooler.
I have to get on the roof twice a year already, once to open the swamp cooler and once to close it. Trust me, that is more than enough for me. I’m sure my neighbors get quite a laugh every year as I army crawl up the roof to the top and then hold onto the swamp cooler like it’s my long lost friend. I do more praying on those two days than the entire rest of the year combined.
But back to those lights. Do I really have to take them down? Can’t they just stay up there all year? I’m not going to turn them on until Thanksgiving weekend so maybe no one will notice. I think I’ll take my chances. If I don’t get invited to the neighborhood barbeque this year, I’ll know why.
